The Cape Verde islands are a small archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, 1,500 km south of the Canary Islands and approximately 450 km off the western coast of Senegal. The archipelago is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets.
The Cape Verde islands can be divided into two main groups. The Sotavento group (sotavento means leeward) is the southeast group of islands which include Santiago, Majo, Fogo and Brava. The Barlavento group (windward islands) is the northwest group of islands, which includes Santo Antoa, Sao Vicente, Santa Luzia, San Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista. The Barlavento islands, situated in the trade wind zone, are more interesting for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
One of the windiest surf destinations close to Europe, Cape Verde is worth a visit year-round, but the best period for windsurfing is from November to June, when the wind is more strong and reliable. The great advantage of Cape Verde as a windsurfing destination is a variety of conditions available, from blasting to big waves. With so many distinctive spots, Cape Verde is a real paradise for windsurfing.
